13. Giving What You Love

Think about your favorite thing—maybe a toy, some money, or even your time. Now imagine giving that thing away to someone who needs it more than you do. That’s real generosity.

In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:177), Allah describes righteous people as:

“Those who give money that they love to near relatives, orphans, those in poverty, travellers, those who ask for help, and towards freeing slaves; they perform prayers and pay the purifying charity; they keep promises when they make them; and those who are patient when suffering hardship and stressful times; they are the ones who are true and morally correct”

What Does This Mean?

It’s easy to give away things we don’t need. But Allah tells us that true goodness is giving from what we love—things that matter to us.

This could be:

  • Sharing your favorite food with someone who is hungry.

  • Giving money to help someone, even if you planned to spend it on yourself.

  • Helping someone in need, even when you’d rather relax.

Why Is This Important?

When we give what we love, it shows that our hearts are not controlled by money or possessions. Instead, we show gratitude to Allah by using our blessings to help others.

How Can We Apply This?

  • Next time you give, ask yourself: “Am I giving my best, or just my leftovers?”

  • Try donating something that you personally love.

  • Remember, what we give for Allah is never lost—it’s always rewarded.

True generosity isn’t about giving what’s easy—it’s about giving what’s meaningful. When we give from what we love, we grow closer to Allah and become better people.
