7. Having a good character

Allah tells us all how to be good people and what the most important acts are that we must do.

In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:83), Allah says:

“Worship only Allah; be kind to your parents, relatives, orphans, and those who are very poor. Speak kindly to people, perform prayers, and give money to purifying charitable causes.”

What Does This Mean?

Allah gave guidance to people before us, just like He gives it to us now. In this verse, He reminds us of some of the most important values in life:

  • Worship only Allah – Our love, trust, and prayers should go to Him alone. We don’t pray to anyone or anything other than Allah.

  • Be kind to your parents and to others – Especially those who are vulnerable, like orphans and those in need. Being kind doesn’t mean that we allow people to hurt us – sometimes being kind means helping others to improve their behaviour.

  • Speak kindly – The way we talk to people matters. Our words can heal or hurt. Kindness means being honest, not letting others hurt us, standing up for others who are being hurt, and encouraging others to be better people.

  • Perform prayers – Praying to Allah keeps us humble, makes us grateful and helps us to stay on the right path.

  • Give money to charity – If we have money, we must help those who are less fortunate. Those who need to take money from charity have a right to it because Allah said money must be provided to those who need it.

How Can We Follow This Today?

  • Treat everyone with respect, no matter who they are. Even people who do bad things deserve respect, but we don’t have to agree with their actions.

  • Choose kind words, even when you’re upset.

  • Remember that helping others, and being the best we can be, is part of our faith.

This verse teaches us that goodness isn’t just about what we believe—it’s about what we do and how we treat the people around us.
