Have you ever encouraged someone to do something—good or bad? Maybe you motivated a friend to help someone, or maybe you influenced someone to be unkind. Allah teaches us that whatever we encourage, we share in its reward or consequence.
In Surah An-Nisa (4:85), Allah says:
“Whoever speaks up for a good cause will share in its benefits, and whoever speaks up for a bad cause will have a share of the consequences.”
What Does This Mean?
This verse reminds us that our influence matters.
-
Encouraging good earns us rewards. If you help someone do a good deed—like charity, kindness, or learning—you also share in its blessings.
-
Encouraging bad earns us sin. If we encourage someone to lie, hurt others, or make a bad choice, we share in their wrongdoing.
-
Allah controls everything. No action goes unnoticed—Allah sees every influence we have on others.
How Can We Apply This in Our Lives?
-
Be a force for good. Encourage people to be kind, helpful, and honest.
-
Avoid leading others toward harm. Even joking about bad things can influence someone negatively.
-
Think before you act. Ask yourself, “Am I inspiring someone to do good or bad?”
Why Does This Matter?
This verse teaches us that our words and actions don’t just affect us—they affect those around us. When we use our influence for good, we build a better world and earn Allah’s reward. So, be the person who lifts others up, not the one who pulls them down.
