In life, people work, earn, and trade to support themselves. But how we earn and spend money matters in the eyes of Allah. Islam teaches us to do business fairly, without cheating or harming others.
In Surah An-Nisa (4:29), Allah says:
“Those of you who believe, do not spend each others money unjustly; rather let there be business by mutual agreements among you. Do not destroy each other, for Allah is merciful to all of you.”
What Does This Mean?
This verse teaches us some key principles about money, business, and fairness:
-
Do not take wealth in unjust ways. This includes stealing, fraud, cheating, bribery, and any unfair business practices.
-
Business should be done fairly and with agreement. Both sides in a business deal should be happy with what they are getting—no one should be forced or tricked.
-
Do not destroy each other. This teaches us that for us to all be successful, we must treat each other fairly.
How Can We Apply This in Our Lives?
-
Be honest in business and work. Never cheat, steal, or lie to gain wealth.
-
Make sure all deals are fair. Whether buying, selling, or working, ensure both sides agree willingly.
-
Avoid harmful or unethical earnings. Money gained through dishonesty or harm will never bring real blessings.
-
Be careful of those who are dishonest. Not everyone will know that Allah has commanded that we are fair, and even some people who know will not follow the commands. Be careful because there are people who lie and cheat.
Why Does This Matter?
This verse reminds us that true success is not just about making money—it’s about earning in a way that is fair, honest, and pleasing to Allah. Wealth comes and goes, but we must always aim to remain close to Allah.
