36. Treat Orphans Fairly

Imagine a child whose parents haven’t been able to protect or care for them. They depend on others to be kind and fair. In Islam we call these children ‘yatim’. Allah commands us to treat yatim with justice and honesty, especially when managing their wealth.

In Surah An-Nisa (4:2), Allah says:

“Give yatim their wealth and do not exchange your bad things for their good ones. And do not mix up their wealth with your wealth. This is a major sin.”

What Does This Mean?

This verse teaches us:

  • Yatim have rights. If a yatim inherits wealth or property, it must be protected until they are old enough to manage it.

  • Do not take advantage of yatim. No one should misuse their money or treat them unfairly.

  • Taking what belongs to yatim is a major sin. It is not only dishonest but also cruel, and Allah warns strongly against it.

How Can We Apply This in Our Lives?

  • Be kind and fair to yatim. They deserve love, care, and protection.

  • If entrusted with something, handle it with honesty. Whether it’s someone’s money, property, or even their trust, never misuse what isn’t yours.

  • Support those in need. If you see yatim or vulnerable child struggling, help them in any way you can.

Why Does This Matter?

This verse reminds us that justice, honesty, and kindness should be at the heart of everything we do. Yatim are among the most vulnerable in society, and how we treat them reflects our character and faith. Allah is watching over them—and over us—to see how we act.
